Long-time local leader Marcy Crowley dies
April 07, 2010Marcy Crowley, a long-time selectman in Wayland and an active member of the MMA for many years, passed away on April 2 at age 86.
A memorial service will be held in a tent by the Wayland Town Office, 41 Cochituate Road, at 2 p.m., on Saturday, April 10.
Marcy was born on Nantucket Island in 1923 and grew up in Brookline. After high school, she attended what has since become Colby Sawyer College, graduating in 1942. She married Joseph Crowley soon after the war, and after spending time in California, they settled in Wayland in 1956.
Marcy’s involvement in local affairs began with groups like the Ski Club of Wayland and the Wayland League of Women Voters. She eventually served on Wayland’s Finance Committee and went on to serve as a selectman for 24 years.
She became an active leader in the Massachusetts Selectmen’s Association, the MMA, the MBTA Advisory Board, the Advisory Board of the Environmental League of Massachusetts, and many other committees in the Metro-West region.
Marcy was known for a deep belief in the ability of local government to improve lives. She developed a particular passion and expertise in the area of environmental planning, especially in transportation. She also helped found the Network of Women in Government and Public Policy and had the opportunity to mentor many young women.
She was a charter appointee on the Governors Commission on the Status of Women.
She also became a leader in the American Society for Public Administration, first in the Massachusetts chapter and then nationally, and served as ASPA’s president from 1995 to 1996.
Marcy still had a plan, at the time of her passing, to attend the national meeting of ASPA, which a few years ago gave her its highest award for long-term service and the next year named that award after her.
Just a few months ago, she sold the family home in Wayland and relocated to Ludlow, Vt.
In lieu of flowers, the family is establishing an educational trust to benefit people in the fields of public service and environmental leadership. Contributions in honor of Marcy’s life of service may be sent to the Marcy Crowley Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o the Chittenden Bank, PO Box 256, Ludlow, VT 05149.
